COMMUNITY GROUPS

Where were you?

by Joe Carroccio

ACT UP, once again, attempted to make President Clinton aware of the AIDS crisis, of which he is oblivious-as is our own community. Thursday, September 9 is a day that the gay and AIDS communities should be ashamed of. We are.

ACT UP

CLEVELAND

Upon learning that the president and vice president were going to be in Cleveland that day, we began mobilization at once to inform all gay and AIDS organizations that we were planning on being at the event to voice our discontent, and to get out and join us. Well, I guess you all must think that everything is okay, because after two full days of concentration it was the same core group of ACT UP.

Would the gay community rather have ACT UP just go away? Are we upsetting you because, God forbid, if you join us in a demonstration someone might think you're gay, or have AIDS?

You gutless pansies.

If it wasn't for groups like ACT UP you'd be lining up at the concentration camps. How long do you think we're going to fight for you if you aren't going to fight for yourself? Or haven't you heard, silence

equals death.

Here's the facts, people. We called every main AIDS organization in Northeast Ohio, and gay and lesbian interest groups, and not one representative from one organization showed up. They are not alone. We called people who we knew were personally affected by AIDS, who did not have to be at work, and not even they showed up. What gives?

ACT UP was not unsuccessful. The president knew we were there, however, with just a handful of dedicated activists we made it clear that at least ACT UP cares about you even if you don't give a shit about yourselves.

I really don't care who is pissed off at the tone of this column. This community better get a backbone and some guts-and quick. Your apathy is nothing less than collaboration.

We realize that we had to work quickly and we had little time to get the news to everyone, but when a bar like Numbers, which has a crowd on Wednesday nights, will not put our demo alert flyers in their bar, I wonder whose side they are on. Are they mad because we put flyers up around their bar? They have an AIDS awareness banner; do they just want you to be aware of what they find valid? We're tired of lip service from these same people who make their living off of this community.

Maybe if we're all nice and quiet the AIDS crisis will go away; what do you think?

This community had an opportunity that doesn't happen very often, and you blew

it!
